£2,000 Apprenticeship Grant for SMEs: How Employers Can Benefit from the Government's New Youth Employment Package

The Government has just announced its biggest investment in youth employment in a generation — including a £2,000 cash incentive for every SME that takes on a young apprentice. Here's what it means for your business, which programmes qualify, and how to act before the changes land.

What's Been Announced?

On 16 March 2026, the Government unveiled a £1 billion youth employment package designed to unlock up to 200,000 new jobs and apprenticeships for young people across England — the biggest transformation of apprenticeships in a decade.

At the heart of the announcement is a clear message for small and medium-sized employers: there has never been a better time to take on a young apprentice. The financial barriers have been significantly reduced, and the incentives are genuinely significant.

The package builds on reforms announced in December 2025, when the Government confirmed that apprenticeship training costs for under-25s at SMEs would be fully funded. This latest announcement goes further, adding direct cash payments to help employers invest in the next generation of talent.

£2,000

Cash incentive for every SME that takes on a new apprentice aged 16–24. This is a direct payment to your business — not a training subsidy — giving you the flexibility to invest it where it matters most.

The Full Picture: Every Incentive Available to SMEs

The £2,000 apprenticeship incentive is just one part of a comprehensive support package. Stacked together, the financial case for hiring a young apprentice is stronger than it has ever been.

Incentive Amount Who Qualifies
SME Apprenticeship Incentive £2,000 Non-levy SMEs hiring new apprentices aged 16–24
Fully Funded Training 100% All under-25 apprentices at non-levy SMEs (no co-investment required)
Additional Payment £1,000 Apprentices aged 16–18, or 19–24 care leavers / with an EHCP
Zero Employer NI Saving No employer NI contributions for apprentices under 25 earning below £50,270
Youth Jobs Grant £3,000 Hiring 18–24 year olds on Universal Credit for 6+ months

For an SME hiring a young apprentice who also meets the Youth Jobs Grant criteria, the combined value of these incentives could be substantial — on top of fully funded training. That represents a significant Government investment into your workforce.

Who Counts as an SME?

To access the full package of incentives, your business needs to meet the following criteria:

If your business meets these thresholds, the training costs for your apprentice will be fully funded. Combined with the £2,000 cash incentive, the upfront cost of bringing on a new apprentice is effectively zero.

Why This Matters Right Now

Apprenticeship starts among young people have fallen by 40% over the past decade. At the same time, the number of 16–24 year olds not in education, employment, or training (NEET) has risen to nearly one million. The Government's package is a direct response to this — and it means the incentives are generous because they want employers like you to act.

But this isn't just about grants. Apprenticeships deliver real, measurable value to businesses. They give you the chance to develop loyal team members trained to your standards, bring fresh energy and perspective to your operations, and grow into the roles you need to fill. The financial support now available removes the last remaining barrier.

Which Apprenticeships Could Work for Your Business?

At The TESS Group, we specialise in work-based apprenticeships delivered nationally, with flexible monthly start dates and blended learning that fits around your operations. Here are the programmes where we're seeing the strongest employer demand right now — including some specifically called out in the Government's own announcement.

🤖 AI & Automation — Government's #1 Priority

The Government specifically highlighted AI and automation as a national priority in its 16 March announcement, naming the Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner apprenticeship as a flagship programme — with the first cohort already underway this month. With 7.3 million people in the UK lacking essential digital skills, businesses that invest in AI capability now will have a genuine competitive advantage. Whether you're hiring a new team member or upskilling someone already in role, this programme is fully funded for eligible SMEs and is directly aligned to Government industrial strategy. This is the programme to prioritise.

✅ Government-backed programme: The Level 4 AI & Automation Practitioner was named by Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden in his 16 March speech as a key vehicle for building national digital capability — the first cohort is underway this month.

📣 Marketing & Digital

For businesses looking to grow their online presence, improve lead generation, or build an in-house content and campaigns function, a Marketing apprenticeship is an excellent fit for a young hire. The Multi-channel Marketer (Level 3) and Marketing Executive (Level 4) standards are both eligible for the new £2,000 incentive and are fully funded for qualifying SMEs. You get a team member who is learning cutting-edge digital marketing skills — SEO, paid social, content strategy, analytics — and applying them directly to your business from day one.

🌍 HR, People & Cultural Learning

CIPD-accredited apprenticeships in human resources and learning & development are a smart investment for businesses that want to build a strong culture and develop their people function from the inside out. The L&D Practitioner (Level 3) and People Professional (Level 5) standards help you develop someone who understands your organisation's values, learning needs, and culture from day one — creating real continuity and reducing turnover. These are particularly well-suited to growing businesses where culture and onboarding are becoming increasingly important.

📋 Business & Project Management

APM-accredited project management apprenticeships and business administration programmes give your new hires the structure and skills to contribute to your operations immediately. These are particularly well-suited to fast-growing businesses that need organised, capable team members who can manage workstreams and improve processes.

⚠️ Leadership & Management — Important Update

The same 16 March announcement also confirmed that several leadership and management apprenticeship standards — including the popular Team Leader (Level 3) — will be defunded from 1 September 2026. This means there is a genuine window of opportunity right now: if you want to develop a young team member into a future manager through an ILM-accredited leadership programme, you need to start before September 2026 to secure funding.

⚠️ Act before September 2026: Leadership & Management apprenticeship standards (including Team Leader L3) are confirmed for defunding from 1 September 2026. Existing learners already on programme will continue to be fully supported — but new starts after that date will not receive Government funding. If you're considering this route, the window to act is now.

Contact our team today and we'll confirm exactly which standards are affected and whether your preferred programme is still available.
