What EPA actually is
End-Point Assessment, or EPA, is the final stage of your apprenticeship. It is an independent check that you have reached the standard for your role, across the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) you have been building all the way through.
The most important thing to know: EPA is not done by TESS. It is carried out by an independent End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) so it is fair and impartial. We prepare you for it, but we do not mark it. Think of EPA as your chance to show everything you have learned and put into practice.
EPA is the destination, not a sudden hurdle. By the time you get here you will have done the work, gathered the evidence, and practised with your coach. You will be ready.
Gateway: getting the green light
Before EPA you go through Gateway. This is the point where you, your employer and TESS all agree you are ready. We do not put you forward until you genuinely are.
To pass through Gateway you will usually need:
All your KSBs evidenced in your OneFile portfolio
Any required Functional Skills in English and maths achieved (if they apply to you)
Any portfolio, project or other entry requirements for your standard completed
Sign-off from you, your employer and TESS that you are ready
Your Skills Coach manages all of this with you, so nothing is left to chance.
How you will be assessed
The exact methods depend on your apprenticeship standard, and your coach will tell you which ones apply to you. The common methods are:
Professional discussion
A structured conversation with your assessor about your work and your portfolio. You talk through what you have done and why.
Observation or practical
The assessor watches you carry out real tasks in your role, or you complete a practical assessment.
Knowledge test
A test or exam covering the core knowledge for your standard, often multiple choice or short answer.
Project, report or presentation
A piece of work based on a real workplace problem, sometimes with a presentation and questions afterwards.
Some standards use one method, others combine two or three. You will know exactly which apply to you well before the day.
How to prepare
Know your KSBsRead through the knowledge, skills and behaviours for your standard so you can talk about each one with a real example.
Keep your OneFile portfolio tidyMake sure your evidence is uploaded, clearly mapped, and easy to find. Your portfolio is your best friend in a professional discussion.
Use CoachyYour 24/7 AI tutor is brilliant for checking understanding, practising questions, and structuring how you explain your work. Ask it to quiz you.
Do a mock with your coachPractise the discussion or test so the real thing feels familiar, not frightening.
Collect your best examplesHave two or three strong, real stories ready that show impact, problem solving and how you work with others.
Sort the practicalitiesCheck the date, time, format and tech (or location) in advance, so the day itself is calm.
You are not preparing for this alone. Throughout your apprenticeship your coach will:
Build your readiness for EPA from day one, not just at the end
Help you gather and map your evidence as you go
Run mocks and give you honest, useful feedback
Tell you when you are genuinely ready, and put you through Gateway
Debrief with you afterwards, whatever the outcome
On the day
Arrive ready, not rushed. Log in or arrive a few minutes early, water to hand, notes closed unless you are told otherwise.
Take your time. It is fine to pause and think before you answer. A considered answer beats a fast one.
Use real examples. Assessors love specifics. "On this project I did X, which led to Y" is gold.
Be honest. If you are unsure, say how you would find out. That shows good judgement.
Breathe. You know your job. This is a conversation about work you have already done.
Your result
Most standards are graded as follows (the exact grades depend on your standard):
Fail You can retake
Pass You have met the standard
Merit Above the standard
Distinction Well above the standard
72% of our learners who sit EPA achieve a Distinction or Merit, well above the typical national picture. We aim for you to do brilliantly, not just to pass.
If it does not go to plan
If you do not pass first time, it is not the end. You can retake the EPA. Your coach will debrief with you, work out exactly what to focus on, and support you to go back and pass. Plenty of successful people have resat an assessment. What matters is getting there.

Questions and answers
Who marks my EPA?
An independent End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), not TESS. This keeps it fair and impartial.
How long does it take?
It varies by standard and method. Some are a single discussion or test of an hour or two; others combine a few methods over a short window. Your coach will give you the exact shape for your standard.
What if I get nervous?
Completely normal. The mocks with your coach are there to make the real thing feel familiar. Remember, you are talking about work you have already done well.
Can I use my portfolio in the assessment?
For methods like a professional discussion, yes, your portfolio is often central. Your coach will confirm what you can refer to.
What happens if I do not pass?
You can retake. We will support you to focus on the right things and go again.
