CIPD qualifications: your questions answered

What is Assoc CIPD?
Assoc CIPD stands for Associate Member of the CIPD — the professional membership grade you become eligible for after completing a CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma (in People Management or Organisational Learning & Development). It lets you use the letters “Assoc CIPD” after your name and signals established, mid-level HR or L&D expertise.
What are the CIPD levels?
CIPD qualifications come at three levels: Level 3 (Foundation Certificate) for those new to HR/L&D, Level 5 (Associate Diploma) for mid-career professionals, and Level 7 (Advanced Diploma) for senior and strategic leaders. Each maps to a CIPD membership grade — Foundation, Associate (Assoc CIPD) and Chartered (MCIPD).
Which CIPD level is right for me?
As a guide: Level 3 if you are new to HR or moving into it; Level 5 if you are an experienced practitioner heading for management or specialist roles; Level 7 if you are targeting director, board or strategic-leadership positions. Use the level-finder quiz at the top of this page to get a recommendation.
What is the difference between CIPD Level 5 and Level 7?
Level 5 (Associate Diploma) is mid-level — it leads to Associate membership (Assoc CIPD) and suits practitioners advancing into management. Level 7 (Advanced Diploma) is master's-level — it leads to Chartered membership (MCIPD) and suits senior, strategic HR leaders. See the CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma for the advanced route.
How much do CIPD qualifications cost, and how long do they take?
At TESS: Level 3 from £1,500–£2,500 (6–9 months), Level 5 £2,500–£4,300 (12–15 months), and Level 7 £6,000–£9,000 (18–24 months). Many learners take a CIPD qualification within a levy-funded apprenticeship at no extra course cost — we confirm exact pricing and funding options on a short discovery call.
What CIPD membership do I get when I qualify?
Completing a CIPD qualification makes you eligible for the matching membership grade: Foundation (Level 3), Associate / Assoc CIPD (Level 5) and Chartered Member, MCIPD (Level 7) — with Chartered Fellow (FCIPD) available later as your experience grows.
