ILM qualifications: your questions answered

What is an ILM qualification?
ILM (the Institute of Leadership & Management) is the UK's largest awarding body for leadership and management qualifications, and part of the City & Guilds Group. ILM qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and nationally recognised — a credible, transferable credential in leadership, management and coaching & mentoring.
What are the different ILM levels?
ILM offers qualifications across the levels of leadership. At TESS the most popular are Level 3 (new and aspiring managers), Level 5 (experienced and middle managers moving toward strategic roles) and Level 7 (senior leaders, executives and executive coaches). Each step up adds depth, autonomy and strategic scope.
Which ILM level is right for me?
As a guide: Level 3 suits team leaders and supervisors new to management; Level 5 suits experienced managers heading for middle or strategic leadership; Level 7 suits senior leaders and executive coaches. Use the quick level-finder at the top of this page, or compare them side by side in the table above.
How much does an ILM qualification cost?
At TESS, ILM Leadership & Management starts from £895 (Level 3) and £1,295 (Level 5); ILM Coaching & Mentoring runs from £1,500 (Level 5) to £3,000–£4,500 (Level 7). Many learners take an ILM qualification within a levy-funded management apprenticeship at no extra course cost — we confirm exact pricing and funding options on a short discovery call.
Are ILM qualifications recognised?
Yes. ILM is Ofqual-regulated and part of City & Guilds, and its qualifications are internationally recognised and widely valued by UK employers as evidence of practical, work-ready leadership and management capability.
What is the difference between ILM and CMI qualifications?
Both are respected UK awarding bodies for leadership and management. ILM (part of City & Guilds) is the largest by volume and known for practical, workplace-applied learning; CMI is the chartered body and can lead to Chartered Manager status. Weighing them up? See our CMI levels compared guide.
